Controlling Root Systems. Preventing Property Damage.
Are your tree roots growing wild? Are they growing into places they don’t belong?
While it is well known that trees add value to your property, there are times when tree root growth will interfere with the structures, sidewalks or driveways on that property. Installing root barriers is a good alternative to removing the tree that enables you to retain this value.
Root barriers are installed beside the object you wish to protect from root damage. When the tree roots reach the barrier the growth is redirected and the object is protected from root damage. Root barriers help preserve the health and value of mature trees, while protecting your hardscapes from expensive damage.
Root barriers are used for a variety of hardscapes and landscapes including:
- Building Foundations
- Sidewalks
- Retaining Walls
- Driveways
- Curbs
- Walkways
- Drainage Pipes
- Patios
- Swimming Pools
- Landscape Beds
What Root Barrier System brand does Jimmy's Tree Service use?
Jimmy’s Tree Service uses the Biobarrier® Root Control System. “Biobarrier is made of a durable, nonwoven, polypropylene geotextile fabric with permanently attached nodules containing trufluralin. Trifluaralin prevent root tip cells from dividing, which is the method by which roots grow. The nodules are engineered to slowly release the trifluralin, creating a zone where root growth is inhibited. The geotextile fabric is porous to allow air, nutrients and water through it so that soil hydrology can continue to be healthy.” (Hort Enterprises, Fiberweb, Inc.)
According to Fiberweb, Inc. “Trifluralin, the time-released, built-in herbicide stops cell division and is not systemic. It will not leach into groundwater.”
Do I need a permit to install a root barrier system?
In some areas, you may need a permit to install a root barrier, especially if the installation is near public infrastructure or within specific zones of your property. We can help you determine if a permit is required and assist in obtaining the necessary approvals before installation.
When should I install a root barrier?
It’s best to install a root barrier when planting a new tree or when roots are already starting to cause damage. Early installation is ideal for preventing future root-related problems. However, if your tree’s roots are already causing issues, a root barrier can still be installed to protect your property.
Can root barriers be installed around large or mature trees?
Yes, root barriers can be installed around mature or large trees, though the process is more complex than with younger trees. Our professionals use specialized equipment to install barriers around established trees while minimizing any disturbance to the tree’s root system.
How long does a root barrier last?
A properly installed root barrier system can last for many years, with some materials offering a lifespan of 20 years or more. Regular inspections can help ensure that the barrier remains intact and effective in preventing root encroachment.
